Upile Chitete-Mawenda is a self-driven, highly motivated and hardworking individual, who holds both a B.Sc. in Chemistry and M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry from the University of Malawi (UNIMA, formerly Chancellor College). As a JICA ABE Scholar, Upile studied at Sophia University and United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) in Japan for M.Sc. in Green Science and Engineering, and a Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Science, respectively.

Having worked as a Chief Chemistry Laboratory Technician at UNIMA, School of Natural and Applied Sciences, in the department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (2010-2016), Upile has extensive laboratory experience which provided her with a solid foundation in practical skills and problem-solving abilities. During her MSc studies at Sophia University, she worked as a Research Assistant in the Microwave Laboratory of Material Sciences Department where she also collaborated with a Japanese company to investigate the promising potential of LEDs for microbial sterilization. She joined the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in the School of Science and Technology, Physics and Biochemical Sciences Department as a Staff Associate in Chemistry in 2016 and is currently working as a Chemistry Lecturer. Teaching undergraduate chemistry modules, and collaborating in chemistry-related research activities are some of her current duties.

Upile is a full member of professional bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), American Chemical Society (ACS), Association of Professional Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Malawi (APCCEM) and Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).

Outside work, Upile enjoys fun walks with colleagues, playing and watching netball, and spending quality time with family.
