Besides teaching and consultancy, Prof. H.W.T. Mapoma has a great passion for research and skills gathering in Environmental Science and Sanitation. He has more than 10 years of teaching experience in environmental pollution and management, water resources management, hydrogeochemical studies, applied statistics and atmospheric environment. His current research focuses on groundwater quality and geochemical modelling (especially trace elements and isotope geochemistry), and air quality. He has attended various training in his field including management of aquifers such as conflict management (GIZ's Global Campus 21 program) and Innovations in Cross Boundary Approaches to Sustainable Development (ICE WaRM, ALAF program, Australia). He is currently, an external examiner for reputable Universities in SADC region. He is an Editor-In Chief of the Malawi Journal of Applied Sciences and Innovations (MJASI). He is the former Deputy Dean of Applied Sciences, and current Head of Physics and Biochemical Sciences Department. He is an Alumni of the University of Ghent (Belgium) and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).

He has authored and co-authored papers in reputable journals. Moreover, he has been an active manuscript reviewer for Springer and Elsevier journals. He ahs also edited some local academic text books including:
Kalea, S. (2011). JCE Physical Science: Objectives, Revision Notes and Practical Work. (C. C. Kaonga & H. W. T. Mapoma, Eds) (New ed.). Blantyre: Bookmate Publishers.
