Research Interests
Food Science and Nutrition: Quality, Safety and functionality of food
Gertrude Cynthia Sitolo graduated with Bachelor of Science degree from University of Malawi – The Polytechnic (2006) and earned a Master of Science degree in Food Science from The University of Melbourne, Australia in 2013. She holds a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition from Hiroshima University, Japan (2020) specializing in food functional science. She is a member of the Department of Physics and Biochemical Sciences, Food Science/Technology Section. Her research area of interest is in quality, safety and functionality of food with special emphasis on novel role of plant materials and dietary supplement in maintaining or improving health status of the general population. She has attended several trainings including Biotechnology application in food industry for developing countries in Beijing, China and Quality Management Systems (QMS) in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Sitolo is a member of a national committee which advocates for quality and safe food and has served in other technical committees for food standards development. She has also served as a Board member for Consumers Association of Malawi, a non-profit making organization and mouthpiece for consumers in Malawi. Before joining University of Malawi, Dr. Sitolo worked with Barloworld Plascon (MW) Limited and Globe Group of Companies. She likes travelling appreciating how beautiful the world is, nature.
