Biography & Background
Isaac Gwayi is an Electrical Engineer, Lecturer, and renewable energy researcher at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), Malawi. He holds a PhD in Renewable Energy from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, completed in 2026, an MSc in Engineering specialising in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a BSc in Electrical Engineering from MUBAS. His research focuses on off-grid renewable energy mini-grids, energy storage systems, hybrid energy storage systems, lithium-ion battery degradation and aging, aging-aware energy management and control, and optimal techno-economic sizing of energy storage systems.
Isaac has extensive academic experience in teaching, student supervision, research, and academic leadership, including serving as Head and Deputy Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at MUBAS. He has participated in renewable energy and rural electrification projects, including the Transforming Energy Access – Learning Partnerships (TEA-LP), 2019 – 2021, and the Sustainable Off Grid Electrification for Rural Villages (SOGERV), 2015 – 2017, projects. His research has resulted in publications on energy storage selection, lithium-ion battery aging, battery capacity fade, and aging-based control of hybrid energy storage systems for off-grid renewable energy applications. His technical expertise includes renewable energy and energy storage modelling, power electronics, energy management, control systems, and optimization using techniques such as Particle Swarm Optimization. He is a Graduate Engineer with the Malawi Engineering Institution.
