Biography & Background
Francis Masi is a Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), where his work spans biomedical signal processing, medical image processing, and software engineering. His research focuses on applying artificial intelligence to healthcare, particularly computer-assisted minimally invasive surgery and computer-based rehabilitation systems. He holds a master's degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China.
Alongside his teaching and research, Francis serves as Acting Manager of the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at MUBAS, a facility that supports innovation, prototyping, and small-scale manufacturing. He is also an active member of the U.S.–Africa Teaching Fellows program, where he champions modern engineering education and learner-centred teaching practices.
Before his current roles, Francis worked as a Design Studio Engineer, collaborating with Rice University on research projects to develop engineering solutions for real-world challenges. He is committed to strengthening engineering education and building a culture of innovation in Malawi and the wider region.
