Abstract

Chimwankhunda Dam, a once-popular recreational center in Blantyre, Malawi, has deteriorated due to neglect and siltation, rendering it defunct. In the 1990s, its clean waters and lush surroundings provided locals with opportunities for fishing and picnicking. Currently, the dam stands as a testament to environmental degradation and administrative oversight. In light of these challenges, this study aims to revitalise this dam through comprehensive topographic mapping and analysis of sedimentation. Advanced data collection techniques and software were employed to conduct detailed topographic mapping of the dam and its surroundings. Sediment accumulation was assessed to understand its impact on water storage capacity. The study revealed significant sedimentation within Chimwankhunda Dam, which has greatly reduced its water storage capacity and contributed to downstream erosion. To address these issues, the study recommends constructing check dams and implementing sediment management strategies such as reforestation. These measures aim to trap sediment, reduce erosion downstream, and mitigate further siltation in the dam.
